Wednesday, November 2: Obedience or Independence?

“if my relationship to Him is that of love, i will do what He says without hesitation.  if I hesitate, it is because I love someone more…. namely, myself.”  — My Utmost For His Highest

before anything else, let me get this straight.  the reason i am trying hard, agonizing, and stumbling towards holiness is not because i think it is the way i can get to heaven.  no!  being weak and sinful by nature, i can never do that on my own.

“for it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” –Ephesians 2: 8-9

only God can give me the grace to get there.  in fact, He has already actually done the job of my salvation.   from my limited point of view, it did seem like He caught me by the skin of my teeth.

that is the reason  i want to be holy– because i love my wonderful Redeemer.

why do we have to obey God?  we don’t have to.  why?  because He never forces Himself on anyone and neither does He force obedience.  but,  obedience comes naturally when we are crazily in love with Him.   “if you love me, You will keep my commandments.”  — John 14:15

Christ is not happy if we obey only to gain something.  He wants us to obey out of great love for Him.  imagine if our kids obeyed us only because they have a big inheritance coming, would we be happy?

“my Lord, thank You for this reminder.   but most of all, thank You for loving me and working on me.  help me to love You even more so that my life will be totally and directly in obedience to You.  i pray for the same for my sons and daughter, their families, and all my loved ones. amen.”
