Tuesday, August 2: The Teaching of Adversity

“The typical view of the Christian life is that it means being delivered from all adversity. But it actually means being delivered in adversity, which is something very different.

If you completely give of yourself physically, you become exhausted. But when you give of yourself spiritually, you get more strength.” —  My Utmost For His Highest

what does that mean?  in this action-addicted world, we tend to face difficulties and trials from the standpoint of our own common sense– with our own means, with what we have, with what we can get or borrow, with our own mental and physical strength until we are sapped dry.  we become frantic, we panic, we get hysterical, we go berserk, we turn desperate, we run amok, we get wild.

but we are not meant to do any of that.

today’s reading tells us that our physical strength which is but limited is supposed to be supportive only of the strength that we are to draw from the limitless power and wisdom of the divinity that resides in us — our spiritual strength.  we draw from the Spirit of God.

in the overwhelming times of adversity, we are called to quiet our minds in His presence — to be still and let God.  the irony of this complete surrender and dependence on our Lord is that we gain the strength we need for the present moment… blessings flow like “streams of living water.”

only then can we evidently be of good cheer.  for like Him, with Him, and in Him, we are meant to overcome the world.

“My Lord and my Strength, how easy life is when we anchor it on You. You never abandon or forget us.  we take refuge in You in times of trouble and You never fail us.  Increase our trust in You, dear God so that nothing fazes us anymore.  we become fearless in Your perfect love.  thank You, my beloved Jesus.  bless me, my kids, and my loved ones. amen.”
